Mechanical Design Product Engineer (1696853) $85k – $90k per year

McKenzie, TN OR Chicago, IL

Full Time; Direct Hire

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The Product Engineer is responsible for designing manufacturing processes and products with various criteria in mind, including cost-effectiveness, user experience, and regulatory standards. The role of a product engineer is also to analyze data from tests on prototypes and craft progress reports. The successful candidate will have hands-on experience using Autodesk CAD software, with strong attention to detail and a creative flair. Solid project management skills are required to meet the daily demands of the role. The role collaborates with the Engineering and Management teams on design projects per Company's Standard Operating Procedures, AAR, DOT, and FRA rules, and regulations. This position reports directly to the General Manager.

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Use specialized software to create models and drawings of products
  • Review drawings for accuracy and quality purposes
  • Construct prototypes and confirm designs with customers
  • Research new materials and methods of development
  • Lead review and calculation of labor, material, and other production costs for quoting purposes
  • Organize and maintain existing engineering records
  • Ensure components and assemblies adhere to applicable industry and business standards
  • Conform to all regulatory requirements such as FRA, DOT, OSHA
  • Modeling and adhering to values and employee behaviors
  • Additional duties as assigned

SKILLS/SPECIFICATIONS:

  • In-depth knowledge of engineering design concepts and practices
  • Understanding of Manufacturing Welding Processes
  • Understanding steel fabrication and production of metal structures
  • Extensive knowledge of CAD modeling, drawings, and machine design with experience in design analyses; experience with Solid Edge is a plus
  • Effective documentation, presentation, and composition skills
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, schedule, coordinate, and problem solve effectively
  • Proven ability to work well under pressure
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Team player with the ability to work on your own

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or manufacturing engineering required
  • At least one (1) year of experience or internship in design or manufacturing engineering in a heavy industrial environment
  • Experience in lean manufacturing and continuous improvement
  • Previous railway experience is a plus

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Coordinate and actively participate in all phases of the design and manufacturing of new and existing products and components utilized in the rail industry
  • Identify and assist with new processes and procedures for welding, fabrication, machining, and processing of steel components
  • Research, analyze, and evaluate customer design proposals, specifications, and other data for feasibility and cost of designs and applications for the rail industry
  • Prepare and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, SOPs, and visual aids for manufacturing
  • Create solid models and 2D drawings utilizing (omit Autodesk) CAD software
  • Coordinate quoting, procurement, design, CNC programming, and product development activities
  • Promote cost reduction and process improvement activities focusing on gross margin improvements
  • Support operations, including but not limited to Quality, Purchasing, and Production as a technical resource
  • Provide technical feedback to internal and external customers on problems and product enhancements.
  • Ability to work outside of normal working hours or travel on occasion.
