About the Indiana School for the Deaf (ISD):

The Indiana School for the Deaf (ISD) is a fully accredited school for Deaf and hard-of-hearing students in nursery school through high school. The Indiana School for the Deaf is accredited by AdvancED Indiana and the Conference of Educational Administrators of Schools and Programs for the Deaf (CEASD). It provides services to approximately 342 students enrolled on campus. About 60% of the students live on campus during the academic year. ISD offers a full range of social activities, including sports, clubs, and organizations.  


Role Overview:

The Paraprofessional supports teachers and staff in the classroom and at educational events. This position will provide additional supervision during special events and/or as needed to cover staff absences. The incumbent may be assigned to supervise students in classrooms, lunchrooms, and off-campus trips under the supervision of the teacher.

 

Salary:

This position traditionally starts at $17.54 per hour but may be commensurate with education and job experience.

 

A Day in the Life:

 

The essential functions of this role are:

  • Supervise students in dormitories, classrooms, lunchrooms, and off-campus trips under the supervision of the teacher or residential leader.
  • Supervise student housekeeping activities and inspect dorms and living areas for safety and cleanliness.
  • Prepare necessary materials as directed by the teacher and/or supervisor.
  • Assist with activities outside the classroom and/or dormitories.
  • Support discipline policy of the classroom/residential program resolving conflicts between students and assisting in monitoring behavior plans.
  • Assure that student hygiene, toileting, and safety needs are met.
  • Perform a variety of duties providing for the guidance, care, training, development, and socialization of hearing and/or visually impaired, physically challenged, or developmentally delayed students.
  • Follow emergency procedures for fire, storm, and tornado drills and warnings.
  • Promote the nine dimensions of student development, including cultural, intellectual, life planning, political, spiritual, physical, emotional, sexual, and social.
  • Coordinate programs and recreational activities for students and complete and document programming plans, paperwork, incidents, and student progress .
  • Workday attendance at assigned worksite(s) is an essential function of this position.

What You'll Need for Success:

 

You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment: 

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Basic understanding of the characteristics needs and effective methods of guidance of students of varying ages at different stages of development and at different levels of mental ability.
  • Knowledge of state, federal, and agency rules, and regulations.
  • Ability to keep accurate records concerning the care of the students.
  • Ability to supervise students in dormitories, classrooms, and other on- and off-campus activities.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
